MxMo: Brown, Bitter and Stirred
This post is coming to you today from Portland, Oregon-an entire city enamored of cocktails with a particular flair for all things brown, bitter and stirred. At the moment, I’m sitting at Clyde Common drinking one such cocktail made artfully by my buddy, Jonny Ericsen. Next to me sits our first featured MxMo submitter and famed owner of multiple livers, Rocky Yeh of NW Vivant and his...

Mixology Monday: Brown Bitter and Stirred
As a longtime fan and one time participator (click here for embarrassing videos) in Mixology Monday, I couldn’t resist the urge to host when Paul had an open spot. Being the creative powerhouse I am, I offered up a theme. Yes, the same theme that dominates this blog and the first four words that come out of my mouth at any bar: brown, bitter and stirred. Basically, I’m asking you to...

Malort Face
Malort. It’s brown. It’s certainly bitter. And, I love it. But, not everyone has the same reaction to this notoriously bitter wormwood and grapefruit rind spirit. In fact, the face most make after taking their first sip is notoriously hilarious.

A very wise individual named Big Rye over on Flickr decided to set up a photo pool for these...

Manhattan Cocktail Classic Gala
An Open Letter to Kazuo Uyeda
Dear Mr. Uyeda:
Thank you for spending the two days you took away from your bar with us. The opportunity to share your fascinating take on the industry we all love so well is something I will always treasure. I’m fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to document this event and will be able to keep and share those lessons with my peers here in the states.
Thank you for teaching us...
Bols Genever Punch Party and Cocktails at Covet
Over the next three months, we’re going to be throwing a whole bunch of Bols Genever parties with our good friend and Bols goddess, Katie Darling. Tonight, we’ll be at Louis 649 drinking two complimentary punches (one recipe from Erick Castro and a bowl full of Holland Razorblades) from 6-8 p.m.
After Louis, we’re headed uptown for a few of Orson Salicetti’s signature...
Painkiller
Every once and a while, a girl needs to get a little tropical. And, there was no better occasion than last night’s friends and family opening at Painkiller.
They featured three classic tiki cocktails from their menu including: Mai Tais, Zombies, and of course, their namesake, Painkillers. I got a chance to grab a sip of all three, and they were all incredibly refreshing in the hot...
Shaker Faces
We’ve all heard Gaz Regan say that the face you make when you shake is the face you make when you sexually climax. Now, I’m not sure if that’s true (let me know if you have evidence in the comments), but I do know that bartenders often make funny faces while shaking it up. So, Lush Life decided with the help of Combier to document as many shaker faces as we could across the US....

Sable Kitchen in Chicago
When the bartender’s goal is to melt the enamel off my teeth with bitterness, I know I’m in the right spot. When they start pulling Malort (a wormwood and grapefruit liqueur) off of the shelves, I’m even more reassured. But, nothing is better than when two bartenders hear the brown, bitter, and stirred order and fight over who gets to make the cocktail. The two contestants in the...
14 Hours in Chicago
12:20 p.m. arrive at ORD
Reminded why I really dislike this airport. It’s like everyone just watched Home Alone and wants to reenact it. There is no other airport in the country where people run through the terminal like that. 12:40 p.m. hop on the CTA
Reminded that I do, in fact, love Chicago. Riding the train gave me a chance to see the city- which I haven’t visited since I was...

Barrel Aged Cocktails: Clyde Common
barrel aged Negroni (I couldn’t resist taking a few sips before grabbing this photo.)
On my most recent trip to PDX, I, as a creature of habit, made my first stop at Clyde Common, which is very conveniently located on the first floor of the Ace Hotel- my crashpad in town. I bellied up to the bar with every intention of ordering one of Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s reknown barrel aged...
Bay Area Distillery Tour
These amazing photos were taken by M. Quinn Sweeney- my cocktail adventure cohort and in the presence of my favorite muse- Beth Bellanti.
I suggest clicking on the source photos to see them at full size. Tumblr does not do them justice.
